CNC Endmills

CNC endmills work by using sharp, spiral flutes to shear off thin layers of material, known as chips, as the spindle rotates and the machine moves the tool through a workpiece. 

The direction and number of these flutes dictate how chips are ejected, upward to clear the path or downward to stabilize the material, while also managing the heat generated during the cutting process.

For wood, downcut bits are the standard for achieving clean top surfaces on plywood, while upcut bits are utilized for efficient chip removal in deep pockets. 

When machining aluminum, a single-flute carbide upcut bit is the most effective choice to ensure proper chip evacuation and prevent the material from melting or welding to the tool.

CNC milling involves a manageable but multi-step learning curve that focuses on mastering CAD/CAM software and understanding the relationship between feeds and speeds. 

Success for beginners typically comes from starting with simple projects in soft materials like MDF or scrap wood to understand the machine's order of operations before moving to more advanced tasks.

A CNC endmill is a specialized cutting tool used in a CNC machine to remove material by rotating at high speeds and moving along multiple axes.

To choose the right CNC endmill, you should match the bit’s geometry to your material and desired finish, such as using an upcut  bit for fast chip removal and a downcut  bit for clean top edges. 

It is recommended to start with a versatile kit of affordable carbide bits including a 1/4"" endmill, a 60° V-bit for engraving, and a surfacing bit for leveling the spoilboard.
